Ky Walker has done a lot while wearing the purple and white at Port Neches-Groves High School.

Ky Walker

He led the team in interceptions as a defensive back in 2012 as sophomore. Walker was then asked in 2013 to be the starting quarterback. In very Ky Walker fashion, he made the switch and put in a year that was honored as one of the best in Texas

The son of Glynn and Melinda threw 16 touchdowns and 2,128 yards as a junior. He was named to the 2013 Associated Press Sports Editors all-state team as an honorable mention list. His season passing yards last season are fifth best for any quarterback in PN-G history.

This year Walker is back in the PN-G secondary and making sure his final year playing for coach Brandon Faircloth is one he will always remember.

“I really can’t believe it is my senior year,” Walker said. “I remember being a freshman and now I am walking the halls of school as a senior. Coach told us when we were younger to not blink because we would soon be looking up and playing our final games at The Reservation. It is true.”

Walker is one player it is easy to tell Faircloth is going to miss having around at PN-G next year. Faircloth made it very clear he is a fan of Ky Walker.

“I love the kid,” Faircloth said. “My son needs to grow up and become the type of man Ky Walker has grown up to be. If over the next seasons we have more guys with the integrity and attitude Ky has, we will continue to have success here at PN-G.”

Faircloth almost did not have the opportunity to coach Walker at all. Walker moved his freshman year to PN-G school district from Hamshire-Fannett. It did not take long for Walker to find friends he now says has grown into a close bunch he thinks can be playing for a long time this year.

“I have never been on a team that has such a close relationship,” Walker said. “We trust each other and that makes it so much easier. The offense wants to score points for the defense and the defense is geared up to get the ball back to the offense. We want the best for each other and try to help the other side do its job.”

Walker is not a big guy. He stands only 5-feet, seven-inches tall. He has football speed but nobody would bet he would ever win the 200-meters championship in track.

He did not let any of this stand in his way this past Friday in a 33-27 overtime loss to West Orange-Stark.

Faircloth has so much faith in Walker, he had no problem letting Walker cover WO-S receiver Deionte Thompson. Thompson is a highly recruited defensive back who has already made it clear he will sign with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

“I don’t care who you are,” Walker said. “I am going to try to prove I belong on the field just as much as anyone. I work just as hard as anyone on the field and because of that I am not scared to go against a highly recruited player.”

Walker did break up a pass while covering Thompson.

“Well, the pass hit my helmet and fell incomplete,” Walker admitted. “Still, it was a good play and I am happy to play against guys who are considered to be the best.”

Faircloth finally at some point ran out of adjectives to describe Walker a few minutes into an interview.

“Ky is a high character young man who happens to be a very good football player,” Faircloth said. “I am very proud of him and excited he is our player through the rest of this season. We are going to miss him.”

Indian Inklings: Faircloth said even after losing last Friday, he was still proud of his team in a 33-27 defeat to West Orange-Stark. “Any overtime loss is a hard one,” Faircloth said…He said his team will work a lot during this bye week on stopping the run and protecting quarterback Adam Morse. “Both the West Orange offensive and defensive lines did great jobs on us,” Faircloth added. “That is the great thing about playing the Mustangs. They quickly show you exactly what you need to work on to get better.”…Faircloth and the Indians return to play next Friday with a long trip to Lufkin to face Tyler Chapel Hill. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
