In a press release issued by Texas A&M University this afternoon, junior quarterback Dustin Long announced his plans to leave College Station for his senior season, opting to finish his collegiate career at Sam Houston State University.
“This decision is based solely on playing time,” Long said. “I have an opportunity to maximize my playing time as a senior at Sam Houston State.”
“Texas A&M is a great school and I’ve enjoyed my time here,” he added. “My decision is based simply on what I think is best for me. It has nothing to do with Coach Fran or the coaching staff here at A&M.”
Texas A&M has granted Long the official release required by the NCAA in order for a student athlete to transfer and continue competition. In a statement regarding Long’s departure, Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione commented that, “Dustin is a quality young man from a great family. I hate to see Dustin leave, but I respect his wishes to get more playing time. I wish him well with his move.”
Long completed his junior season at A&M with playing time in all 12 games and a start against rival University of Texas. He completed 60-of-104 passes for 709 yards and four touchdowns.
The 6-3, 210-pound graduate of Port Neches-Grove High School was a member of Texas A&M’s player-elected 2003 Leadership Council. Entering this season, Long ranked second to Oklahoma State’s Josh Fields as the Big 12’s returning passer. He set school records at A&M for single game passing yards (299 versus Kansas in 2002), single game passing touchdowns (19, tied with Gary Kubiak, 1982) and season 300-yard passing games (3).
Texas A&M begins spring practice on March 22, 2004 with junior Reggie McNeal leading the Aggies at quarterback.
