Port Neches-Groves football has featured a number of terrific running backs through its 94 year history.
Gordon LeBoeuf dominated the high school ranks from 1953 through 1955, setting an all-time school record of 5,110 yards while leading the Indians to 2 state championships. He has been described by sportswriters as the Babe Ruth of PN-G football.
Jeff ‘The Jet’ Bergeron, playing in the wishbone era of PN-G football, ran for 3,928 yards over just 30 games from 1970-72. His blazing speed and performances remain legendary. There will never be another ‘Jet’.
Other 3,000 yard club members include Bobby LaBorde (3,193 yards, 1953-1955) and Chase Bertrand (3,149 yards, 2010-2011).
And another player, who happens to be the current starting quarterback for the Indians, has also reserved a spot in PN-G rushing history.
With his 120 yards on the ground in the 47-19 win over Santa Fe, Roschon Johnson moved into second place on the all-time PN-G list with 3,977 yards over three seasons, joining the elite company of LeBoeuf, Bergeron, LaBorde and Bertrand.
That’s in addition to the all-time passing yardage record he claimed this season.
With 2 district games remaining, and at least 1 playoff game, Johnson has a few more opportunities to add to those totals.
It took 47 years for anyone to catch up with Bergeron’s 3,928 yards, but LeBoeuf’s 63 year record of 5,110 yards is likely unreachable. That is unless the Indians can go on a 5 game playoff run to the state championship game, and Johnson exceeds his current 120.5 yards per game average.
Regardless, Johnson has already earned his place in the legends of PN-G football, as have his 2016-2018 teammates who contributed to his performances, and the teammates that contributed to every record season before him.
While individual records stand out forever, football is an 11 position game, and the team contributions of blocking on run and pass plays are vital, and there is a receiver on the end of every completed pass. Be proud of them all. These are great times, as always, to be a PNG Indian.
Honor, Pride, Tradition.
