A gutsy call paid off for Manvel. The Mavericks recovered an onside kick after scoring on their first possession of the second half and scored two plays later to go up 14 points.
Manvel never looked back en route to a 56-46 victory over Port Neches-Groves at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown in a Class 4A Division II Region 3 semifinal.
PN-G didn’t give up when they were down 56-21. The Indians added 25 points in the fourth quarter to get within 10, 56-46 with 2:28 to play after a touchdown pass from Brennan Doty to Jayce Nelson and two-point conversion from Tyler LaCour to Alan Hanks.
Manvel recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to secure a date with LaMarque in the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday in Angleton.
Richard Rose was a thorn in the side of PN-G all game, rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown and catching a touchdown pass. Kaylon Meloncon had 8 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown for Manvel.
Dexter Foreman was 9 of 10 for 95 yards and a touchdown pass for Manvel and the other Manvel quarterback, Travaughn Colwell also added a touchdown pass.
The Mavericks racked up 479 yards against the PN-G defense.
Manvel’s defense kept Port Neches-Groves running back Chase Bertrand, who came in with over 1,900 yards in check for most of the game except for a 32-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
PN-G senior quarterback Brennan Doty finished 18 of 34 for 22 yards and two touchdowns but had three interceptions.
Manvel scored 14 points in 18 seconds in its 21-point third quarter. The Mavericks’ defense shut out Port Neches-Groves in the third quarter.
The two teams went into the half tied 21-21.
Port Neches-Groves looked like a well-oiled machine on its first drive, capped off by a 9-yard end around from Amir Jalali. Doty was 7 of 8 for 68 yards on that first drive.
PN-G stopped Manvel on its first drive of the game but the Mavericks would only punt once more after that.
Manvel (11-2) has reached the region final in just its third season as a varsity program. PN-G’s season ends at 8-5. The Indians started the season 1-4 but won seven in a row to get to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
