Roschon Johnson’s growing fan base includes Adam Morse, the Port Neches-Groves High School quarterback whose all-time passing record fell to Johnson’s powerful right arm last Friday.
“I’m glad he’s the one that broke it,” said Morse, now at Lamar University. “I’m glad that it wasn’t someone down the line that broke it. He’s a great athlete, he’s a hard worker, and I knew he would do it at some point.”
Johnson, a four-star recruit who is committed to play football at the University of Texas, set the Port Neches-Groves standard by throwing for 352 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Dayton. He’s now thrown for 6,540 yards with 75 touchdowns in his career.
Johnson hopes to add to that total this week, when his team hosts Santa Fe.
“It feels great, but I really can’t focus on it,” Johnson said of his place in the record books. “I will reflect on it at the end of the season but as of right now it is Santa Fe week.”
“All the records and stuff are fine and good,” he added, “but I’m here to win games and that’s my main goal.”
Johnson has compiled a 26-6 won-loss record (17-2 in district play) en route to becoming one of the top quarterbacks in the state.
He also has a 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom. He said part of his motivation comes from people who did may not have considered Port Neches-Groves a place to find athletes who excel on and off the field.
“Before I started getting offers, nobody really looked at PNG as a school with highly recruited kids,” Johnson said. “ … I hope that I can inspire the next kid that comes out of PNG thinking that he can’t get offers.”
Coach Brandon Faircloth agreed that Johnson is special, regardless of whether he is in uniform.
“He’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of guy for a coach,” Faircloth said. “He’s the best leader that I’ve ever come across. He’s put in the work and we couldn’t be happier for him.”
