MONT BELVIEU – With no signs of distractions, Port Neches-Groves dominated Barbers Hill, 31-14 in Eagle Stadium Friday night.
Days after the Indians were forced to forfeit a win over Crosby, Brandon Faircloth’s team wrapped up a playoff spot by controlling both sides of the ball. After forcing a three and out to start the game, PNG marched down the field only to settle for a 28-yard field goal when the drive stalled.
Following another defensive stand, Roschon Johnson hit Jose Ceja for a 74-yard touchdown to give the tribe a 10-0 first quarter advantage.
Barbers Hill got on the board with 6:48 left in the second quarter on three-yard quarterback run up the middle. Just over five minutes later the Indians would up their lead back to ten. This time Johnson lowered his head, running through a defender for a three-yard score of his own.
With PNG receiving after taking a 17-7 lead into the locker room, you could feel that the Indians had control of the game. Sure enough, Johnson found Ceja for a 20-yard strike with 8:19 left in the third to take a commanding 24-7 lead.
Things went from bad to worse in the fourth quarter when the Texas-commit exploded for one of his signature runs, this time going 56-yards for the knockout blow.
Next up for playoff-bound Port Neches-Groves (6-3, 5-1) is the 99th edition of Mid-County Madness against arch-rival Nederland (9-0, 6-0). The winner of the Bum Phillips Bowl will earn District 12-5A-DII’s number one seed. If the Indians win, it will mark the fourth-straight season PNG has won at least a share of the district crown.
Meanwhile Barbers Hill (6-3, 4-2) also clinched a playoff spot thanks to a Crosby loss. The Eagles will try to wrap up the third seed next Friday at Santa Fe (5-4, 4-2)
