The Port Neches-Groves football team will open the season without its starting 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive right tackle Jaylen Garth.

PN-G head coach Brandon Faircloth told the Enterprise that the University of Texas commit sustained an knee injury in the scrimmage against West Brook last Thursday night at BISD Memorial Stadium.

“We did not see it (the injury) happen on the field, but we saw it on video,” Faircloth said. “It’s really a tough break for a real good kid. He’s been one of our leaders.”

Faircloth indicated his status could be re-evaluated week-to-week during the season.

“He is going to see a doctor next week,” Faircloth said. “I’d rather say he has a knee injury and won’t play this week until we here from the doctor.”

Faircloth shared the news as he listed his starting lineup for Friday night’s season opener at Silsbee. The Indians will call upon senior Jarett Callier to replace Garth in the lineup.

“We don’t know whether or not we will be able to get him back at all,” the Indians’ coach said after Wednesday afternoon’s practice. “We will just have to go week-to-week and see. We’re hoping for the best.”

During the 2018 season, Garth was sidelined toward the end of the season with a torn meniscus.

“I’m taking this very positive,” Garth said in a message to the Enterprise. “I understand that (this) is a very unfortunate injury, nothing I could really do.

Just don’t want to be down and hard on myself because with (the) experience of my last injury, it just makes it worse on you,” he added.
