The Indians are getting closer to playing on new turf.

The Port Neches-Groves school board this week told the superintendent to talk more with Hellas, an Austin-based construction company, regarding the possible replacement of the turf at The Reservation.

But as of Tuesday, the district had not received a final proposal from Hellas. After they do, possibly later this week, the board could call a special meeting as early as next week to make a decision, according to the superintendent’s office.

Board president Rodney Balsamo said on Monday that board members can’t say much about the turf situation because of what he described as “pending litigation.” Balsamo added, however, that the board had to move forward with getting a new playing surface for the stadium.

The existing turf field was installed by FieldTurf two years ago at a cost of $1 million. The money was part of the $9.6 million stadium renovation approved by Port Neches-Groves voters in a 2007 bond election.
