The Port Neches-Groves ISD board reassigned high school football coach and boys athletic coordinator Matt Burnett to the newly-created position of outdoor athletic complex coordinator during a meeting Tuesday night, PN-G Superintendent Lani Randall said.
Burnett will oversee an athletic complex that includes the school’s new $10.2-million stadium. He will also be the school’s student attendance officer, Randall said.
The board approved Randall’s recommendation of the creation of the complex coordinator position. The board then approved Randall’s recommendation that Burnett fill the post, she said. The board approved both unanimously, she said.
Burnett, an all-state defensive end for the PN-G in 1974, compiled a record of 96 victories and 65 losses in 15 seasons.
Burnett coached the Indians to the playoffs six times, including a 1999 Class 4A state finals appearance. PN-G went 3-6 overall and 1-6 in District 20-4A play this season, which caused the team to miss the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.
Burnett will remain the boys athletic coordinator until a replacement is hired. No hiring timetable is set, Randall said.
