PN-G eliminated from postseason by Angleton

Published 11:03 pm, Friday, November 20, 2015

Port Neches-Groves never found an answer to Angleton’s powerful rushing attack, yielding 311 yards and five touchdowns to sophomore running back Billy Foster and falling 48-30 to the Wildcats in Class 5A area round playoff game.

WHAT HAPPENED
Angleton dominated the offensive line of scrimmage, pounding the ball behind its massive offensive line and platoon of running backs. The Wildcats ran for more than 400 yards, with Foster doing most of the damage.

Three of his five touchdowns were longer than 50 yards, including a backbreaking 72 yarder that came just two plays after PN-G had clawed to within two scores early in the fourth quarter.

PN-g kicked a field goal on its first possession edge, but then Angleton poured on four straight touchdowns to open up a 28-3 lead that forced PN-G to play from behind.

“They’re a big physical offensive line that was getting us blocked and then with their big running back, there wasn’t much we could do. They had a good scheme,” said PN-g coach Brandon Faircloth.

TURNING POINT
Turnovers compounded matters for the Indians. Angleton converted three turnovers into scoring drives. The first of those followed a fumble recovery just past midfield that paved the way for a 52-yard scoring march and a 14-3 lead.

Then an interception at midfield opened the door on another drive that pushed the wildcats lead to 28-3.

MOST SPECTACULAR PLAY
Angleton’s Foster constantly turned a seemingly simple cutback move at the line of scrimmage into impressive runs, gaining most of his 311 yards on that same play.

PN-G’s Caisen Sullivan made the catch of the game, though, with a one handed snag while falling on his back near the sidelines late in the first half.

One play later Adam Morse connected with Jack Giblin for a 30-yard scoring strike for PN-G’s first touchdown, cutting the halftime margin to 28-10.

BY THE NUMBERS
Morse threw for three touchdowns and 253 yards while trying to rally the Indians. He completed 22 of 34 passes with two interceptions. Kody Cropper paced Indian rushers, gaining 103 yards on 17 carries.

Giblin led Indians receivers with 78 yards and a touchdown on four catches.

HE SAID IT
“I can’t say enough about how our guys fought. They played to the final whistle, all 48 minutes, and never gave up. That’s how PN-G plays,” said Faircloth.
