The youth that was supposed to stunt West Orange-Stark’s growth at the beginning of this 2015 season is quickly becoming their biggest commodity.

Backed by 182 total yards and one rushing touchdown by junior Keion Hancock, the Mustangs (2-0) held quarterback Adam Morse and the Port Neches-Groves offense scoreless in the second half to earn a 28-14 victory at Indian Stadium Friday.

“(Hancock) can’t even shave yet,” joked WO-S head coach Cornel Thompson. “But our guys gave a great effort (Friday) and I’m happy with the way we are improving.”

While not every play for Hancock resulted in six points, the first-year starter came up with the right plays at the right times, including a 31-yard catch on 3rd and 19 during a third quarter drive that resulted in the game-winning touchdown. He also added a five yard touchdown on the Mustangs first possession of the game to give his team an early 7-0 lead.

“I came out here to be a playmaker,” Hancock said. “It feels great to be an underdog and show everyone how good we are. Everyone thinks we are in a rebuilding process, but we don’t rebuild, we reload.”

WO-S junior quarterback Jack Dallas finished the game 14-of-26 for 191 yards and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Wallace that gave his team a 21-14 lead with 3:20 left in the third.

Morse, coming off a 300-yard, five touchdown performance against Clear Lake in Week 1, completed 17-of-34 passes for 220 yards and an 18-yard strike to favorite receiver Jack Giblin in the first quarter. But three turnovers, including a goal line fumble in the second quarter, stalled several promising drives and kept the Indians out of the end zone during the final two quarters.

Giblin finished the night with five catches for 78 yards.

“I can’t tell all our secrets,” said Thompson, “but you know I think we played well against those big receivers at PN-G. They had a lot of weapons and we had to try our best to take some of them out of the game.”

Mustang sophomore defensive back Demorris Thibodeaux came up with a first half interception against Morse and was in on several pass breakups during the win. Junior wide receiver Malick Phillips added the Mustangs second touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run out of the Wildcat for a 14-7 lead.
