HOUSTON – The legend of Port Neches-Groves quarterback Roschon Johnson continues to grow. In the home of NFL duel-threat star Deshon Watson, the man known by the name Shug, torched Lindale for 487 total yards and six touchdowns in a 50-28 Area Round win over the Eagles.
Things got off to an ominous start for Lindale. On the second play of the game, the future Texas Longhorn exploded for a 66-yard touchdown. Instead of panicking, the Eagles answered just three plays later on a trick play. It appeared we were in for a track meet.
After a three-and-out by the Indians, it was the Lindale offense taking control, taking 12 plays to take a 14-7 lead.
Brandon Faircloth’s team fired right back. This time Johnson used his arm to do the damage, connecting with his favorite target Jose Ceja for a 65-yards score.
Lindale regained the lead only to see the PNG buzzsaw get on track. The Indians ended the night on a 36-7 run after trailing 21-14 briefly in the second quarter. Johnson punched it in from one-yard out, before finding Ceja for a 43-yard score before the half.
Things only got worse for the team from East Texas.
Shug was able to break loose again in the third, this time for 87-yards, to give the tribe a 36-21 lead. Just over four minutes later, Johnson fought his way through multiple would-be tacklers for a 73-yard score.
PNG’s 21-point scoring run in the third quarter was capped off with a trick play. Johnson handed the ball off to Kaleb Wuenchel who then passed the ball to Cooper Hammond for the Indians final score.
Next up for Port Neches-Groves (9-3) will be an extremely tough Fort Bend Marshall team. The Buffalos (12-0) took down A&M Consolidated, 49-31 to advance. The Regional matchup will take place at Baytown’s Stallworth Stadium Friday at 7:30 pm.
