The 2019 season ended in a bittersweet fashion for the PN-G Indians.
On a night when the Indian defense played well overall against a highly favored team, they had no answer for the gliding speed of #5 Devon Achane.
Marshall’s first drive was on a short field after recovering the opening onside kick attempt by PN-G, which the Indian defense stopped at the PN-G 34 yard line on a 4th and 14 attempt to take over on downs.
The Indians were forced to punt on their initial drive.
On Marshall’s second possession quarterback Malik Hornsby found a seam on the right side and ran for a 53 yard TD to make it a 7-0 game with 4:42 left in the first quarter.
The Buffalo defense stopped the Indians on their second possession of the game, but a fake punt and run by Zane Hernandez gave the Indians a first down and a new series. PN-G advanced the ball to the 50 and punted on 4th and 4.
Marshall’s next possession resulted in a Buffalo TD as Malik Hornsby quarterback found a seam on the right side and ran for 53 yards to make it a 7-0 game with 4:42 left in the first quarter.
Achane would later score again for the Buffalos on a 31 yard run to advance the score to 14-0 with 9:15 left on the first half clock.
On the Indians next possession they drove the ball 75 yards and a touchdown to pull to 14-7 with 4:47 left in the first half.
After stopping the Buffalo offensive machine again, the Indians started another promising drive. But a stripped ball was recovered and advanced to the PN-G 20 by the Marshall defense.
Devon Achane scored on another 29 yard run to make it 21-7 at halftime.
The two teams would each add a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, a 5 yard run by Hornsby and a 10 yard touchdown pass from Bost to Brady Nail to make it a 28-14 game.
For the remainder of the game only Marshall would find the end zone including once after an interception that stopped a promising PN-G drive.
Stalled drives kept the Indians out of the end zone for the remainder of the game.
Defensively PN-G played well stopping Marshall on several drives including a 4th down stop in the first half.
They consistently held the Buffalos to short gains and a few losses including a sack by Christian Sullivan.
But long runs by running back Achane and quarterback Hornsby were the difference and ultimately too much to overcome.
Achane ripped through the Indian defense for 252 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 19 carries.
Hornsby added 110 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing the ball. Hornsby also completed 6 of 10 passes for 60 yards for 1 TD.
For the Indians QB Blake Bost led the PN-G offense with 17 completions in 28 attempts for 144 yards passing and 1 touchdown pass to junior receiver Brady Nail.
Bost also ran for 49 total yards including a 53 yard scamper in the third quarter to set up the Indians second score.
Zane Hernandez ran the ball particularity well in the second quarter and finished the game with over 60 yards rushing.
Brady Nail had 7 receptions for 69 yards.
The Indians end their season with a 7-4 record. Marshal improved their record to 10-1 and will face A&M Consolidated , a 42-14 winner over Long View Pine Tree, in round 2.
