It wasn’t too long ago that the Johnson family from Port Neches, Texas, didn’t know anything about Clemson.
After Clemson’s back-to-back appearances in the national championship game and 2016 national title, that has changed.
Now, the Johnsons know a lot more about the Tigers. Ronald Johnson, his wife, and son, Roschon Johnson, traveled to Clemson on Tuesday for the Dabo Swinney Camp.
“I had never heard of Clemson. I didn’t know the town was named Clemson,” Ronald told The Clemson Insider. “I knew it was in South Carolina, but basically where it was, we didn’t know.
“But glad we made the trip. Beautiful facility, A-one program. Everything has been A-one. I don’t have anything but praise to give to the school, coaches and facility thus far from what we’ve seen.”
Roschon (6-1, 190) was the headlining name among the quarterback competitors on day one of the Swinney Camp’s second session. The dual-threat from Groves High has more than a dozen scholarship offers and is one of the most highly regarded prospects in the 2019 class.
Ronald said Roschon wanted to compete at the camp because of former Clemson quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist Deshaun Watson.
“Deshaun Watson is one of his favorites,” Ronald said. “Deshaun is one of his role models, on and off the field. You see a quarterback that goes from college to the next level, that kind of raises some eyebrows. It tells you they’re doing some things right. So, he just wanted to kind of see what Clemson was. He had never been.”
As a sophomore last season, Roschon threw for 2,318 yards and 26 touchdowns while throwing only six interceptions.
Roschon added an offer from Florida State earlier this month after collecting offers from Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah in May. Baylor, Florida, Houston, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Penn State, SMU, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M have also offered thus far.
“Roschon is not just a football player, he’s a leader,” Ronald said. “He’s an athlete who can not just throw the ball, but he can make plays with his feet, arm and intellectuals. So, he’s a complete player. If he wants to be a pocket-passer, he can pass in the pocket. If he wants to run it to extend the play, he can extend the play. He’s an intellectual, smart kid and his work ethic is through the roof.”
Roschon camped at Texas last week before participating at North Carolina’s camp on Sunday.
