A successful return for starting quarterback Shea Adams sparked Port Neches-Groves’ first-round playoff win over Brenham on Friday night.
Playing for the first time since injuring his ankle on Sept. 8, Adams showcased his athleticism while scoring three touchdowns for Port Neches-Groves during a 37-7 home victory in the Class 5A-II bi-district round.
It didn’t take long for Adams to make an impact. The 6-foot-4 senior, who holds multiple Division I offers, finished off two touchdown drives for Port Neches-Groves in the first half.
Often taking direct snaps out of the Wildcat formation, Adams scored on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard, leading Port Neches-Groves to a 17-7 advantage at halftime.
That margin swelled in the second half. Brenham fumbled on its first possession, and Port Neches-Groves got a short field to work with after a recovery by defensive lineman Jonathan Hernandez.
Connor Bailey, who served as the starting quarterback while Adams was injured, was still involved in Friday’s first-round win. A well-thrown ball from Bailey to London Nunley went for 13-yards and a touchdown that gave Port Neches-Groves a 23-7 lead after the missed extra point.
As PN-G’s defense continued to dominate, Adams helped the offense keep rolling. His last touchdown of the night came on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
A 23-yard scoring run by Blair Chatagnier put the finishing touches on Port Neches-Groves’ victory.
PN-G advances to the Class 5A-II area round and will face Leander Rouse. That game will take place at 7 p.m. next Friday in Katy’s Legacy Stadium.
