Dustin Long – Class of 1999

Considered to be the all-time best QB in PN-G history, Dustin Long led the Indians to the 1999 state championship game and ended his high school career as one of the top rated passers in Texas high school football history. Long later had record setting seasons at Texas A&M and Sam Houston State University.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER
As a senior, led Port Neches-Groves High School to the 1999 4A Division II State Championship game while throwing for 3,130 yards and 28 touchdowns. Was named Houston Chronicle Offensive Player of the Year. Received the Willie Ray Smith Award, given to the South-east Texas Offensive MVP. Played in the Oil Bowl and the THSCA North-South All-Star game. Passed for 6173 yards and 56 TDs in his high school career. Long is in the top 10 of all-time passing leaders in Texas high school football history.

PROFESSIONAL
Long was undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft, but participated in workouts and a team mini-camp with the Dallas Cowboys. He was allocated to the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe but didn’t see any regular-season action. Long is now pursuing a career in coaching.

SAM HOUSTON STATE
Dustin an all-time season passing record of 4,588 yards, 333 completitions and a .627 completion percentage in 2004 that still stands today.

Burst on the scene with a record-breaking season as a sophomore after not attempting a pass as a freshman … ranks as the Big 12’s No. 2 returning passer behind Oklahoma State’s Josh Fields … tall, strong passer with excellent touch on his passes … has a knack for producing big plays … set school records for single game passing yards (399 vs. Kansas), single game passing touchdowns (7 vs. Texas Tech), season passing touchdowns (19, tied with Gary Kubiak, 1982) and season 300-yard passing games (3) … reached the 1,000- and 2,000-yard barrier in career passing yards faster than any quarterback in school history … was elected to represent the quarterbacks on the Aggies’ Leadership Council.

2002 (SOPHOMORE): In his first season of action in 2002, Long passed for 2,509 yards and 19 touchdowns on 177-of-333 passing … his 2,509 season passing yards ranked No. 2 in school history … started nine games and saw action in all 12 contests … won the starting job with a solid performance against Pittsburgh and started his first career game the following week against Virginia Tech … posted 300-yard passing games against Kansas (399), Texas Tech (367) and Oklahoma State (332) … shared Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors with Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury after passing for 367 yards and 7 touchdowns against the Red Raiders. His 7 touchdowns shattered a Big 12 record.

2001 (FRESHMAN): Did not see any action during the regular season … entered the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl in the fourth quarter, but did not attempt a pass.

2000: Redshirted.

HIGH SCHOOL: Guided Port Neches-Groves to the 4A Division II State Championship game … threw for 3,130 yards and 28 touchdowns, while completing 209-of-390 pass attempts … named Houston Chronicle Offensive Player of Year … received the Willie Ray Smith Award, given to the South-east Texas Offensive MVP … selected to play in the Oil Bowl and the THSCA North-South All-Star game … completed 141-of-262 passes for 2,163 yards and 22 TDs as a junior … completed 63-of-137 passes for 880 yards and 6 scores as a sophomore … coached by Matt Burnett.
PERSONAL: Dustin Dakota Long is the son of Kim and Mike Long of Groves, Texas … born Nov. 30, 1981 in Beaumont, Texas … agricultural development major … his father played quarterback at Lamar from 1976-80.
