Dayton defense holds off PN-G late

Saturday, November 12, 2011
Throughout the game, Port Neches-Groves quarterback Travis Miller had no problem connecting with his favorite target, Jayce Nelson, for touchdowns - 3 to be exact.
But with the game on the line it was Dayton defensive back Gamal Fowler that made the play on the ball, picking off Miller in the end zone with 1:43 to play to secure a 36-31 victory for Dayton Saturday night at the BISD Thomas Center.
The Broncos (8-3) advance to the second round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs where they face Magnolia West, while PN-G is eliminated, finishing the season at 7-4.
Dayton trailed 31-27 at the end of the third quarter but took the lead behind three field goals from all-state kicker Juan Carranco, who had five on the night of 42, 48, 41, 33 and 39.
His last gave Dayton a five-point lead with 2:24 to play in the game.
PN-G quickly moved down the field to Dayton territory after two first down passes from Miller but his pass to the end zone was thrown just on the inside of Nelson and Fowler went up to make t he play. PN-G was out of timeouts and couldn't stop the clock.
Port Neches-Groves football team peaking, playing Dayton

BEAUMONT — The Port Neches-Groves football team is peaking at the right time.
After opening the season with a 2-3 record, the Indians ran off five straight victories to make the playoffs and grab the top Division II seed from District 20-4A. PN-G was able to do that with better play out of its offensive line and a defense that’s gotten better and better at forcing takeaways and tackling.

PORT NECHES — On third-and-goal inside the 10 against Vidor two weeks ago, Port Neches-Groves head coach Brandon Faircloth could have called a bunch of different plays. He could have given it to running back Chase Bertrand, considering he had 20 rushing touchdowns at that point. He could have let Travis Miller throw it, since the senior had 14 touchdown passes at that point.

BEAUMONT — Chase Bertrand rushed for three touchdowns and Travis Miller passed for the other score to lead Port Neches-Groves to a 28-14 win over Central Friday night at the Thomas Center.
The Indians finished the regular season with a 7-3 overall record and a 5-2 mark in district play. After dropping its first two district games for the second season in a row, PN-G was able to rally for five straight wins to earn a playoff spot like it did a year ago.
PN-G’s bidistrict foe will be Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m. right back here at the Thomas Center.
“Central has a very athletic and good football team. They’ve come under some hard times in their last couple of games, but we knew we were going to get their best effort and we did,” said PN-G coach Brandon Faircloth. “They played really hard and they had a good plan. I’m really proud of our kids. It took 48 minutes to put them away. It was kind of methodical at times. We made some plays when we needed to in order to win.”
Segler becomes vocal leader

PORT NECHES — Last year, Port Neches-Groves senior linebacker Steven Segler was on varsity, but played behind Port Arthur News Super Teamer D.J. Schexnider. One of the things that time taught him was to never overlook an opportunity, something he’s done time and time again for the Indian defense this season.
Indians Sink Pirates 22-15

PORT NECHES — Opportunistic was the word on the street Friday night at The Reservation.
The Port Neches-Groves football team created opportunities by forcing three turnovers. The Indians also capitalized on strategic opportunities by throwing it long to Jayce Nelson. They ended Vidor’s last scoring opportunity with a big defensive stand in the fourth quarter.
Finally, PN-G gave themselves the opportunity to play another game, as it clinched a playoff spot with a 22-15 victory over the Pirates in District 20-4A play. Vidor also clinched a playoff spot with Beaumont Ozen’s loss to Nederland.
“I just welcomed the team to the 2011 Texas state playoffs,” PN-G head coach Brandon Faircloth said. “Opportunistic is always a good word from SportsCenter. I’m proud of our defense. Boy, Vidor is good. Our guys played four quarters. We knew that’s what it was going to take, because 22-0 wasn’t going to be the end for the Vidor Pirates. Coach Matthews has them coached up better than that. But, we got the stops when we needed them.”
Huge homecoming for PN-G

PORT NECHES — The final regular season home game at The Reservation this season should be a doozy.
A 7-1 Vidor team comes to town for a game against Port Neches-Groves with wide-ranging implications in the District 20-4A race. If PN-G wins, it locks up a berth in the Class 4A playoffs, but that’s not the only reason the Pirates have the Indians full attention.
“They just win every game,” PN-G head coach Brandon Faircloth said. “Even in their only loss, Nederland scored with 10 seconds left to beat them. They’re just a flat-out good team. They have good players who are well coached. It’s going to be a tough battle and an extreme test for our team.”
The Pirates will face an Indian team with a little momentum of its own. PN-G has won three straight games, scoring 126 points and only allowing 24 over that stretch. It’s been a team effort, but the side of the ball that will be tested the most against Vidor will be the defense.
Nicotre: Indians' touchdown maker

David Coleman The Port Arthur News
PORT NECHES — For all the tradition at a storied program like Port Neches-Groves, there is a new trend developing for head coach Brandon Faircloth. Over the past couple of seasons, there have been a number of smart, heady players leading the Indians offensive line.
This year, PN-G’s line may be young but senior left tackle Kyler Nicotre is its unquestioned leader.

Port Neches-Groves running back Chase Bertrand scored four touchdowns and rushed for 153 yards to push PN-G to a 35-7 win over Little Cypress-Mauriceville, ruining the Bears' homecoming on Friday night.
The Indians were a model of offensive efficiency, scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions that penetrated the red zone.
